Dem Congressman Sides With Trump, Slams Trudeau on Trade

Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi broke with his party's leadership and criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday for publicly fighting with President Donald Trump, The Hill reported.

"While I have serious concerns about President Trump's approach to trade talks with Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau has placed our trade relationship with Canada at risk by publicly feuding with President Trump on the world stage," the Illinois representative said in a statement.

Krishnamoorthi warned that "by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue," the Canadian prime minister is sabotaging trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada.

He insisted that "Trudeau may reap some political benefit through feuding with President Trump, but by engaging with the president on the terms he has so far, instead of on mutually productive ones, he is imperiling the economic well-being of millions of Canadians and Americans."

Krishnamoorthi's views were at odds with members of the Democratic leadership, which quickly slammed Trump for reversing his endorsement of the joint communique and his rhetoric toward G-7 allies, as illustrated in a tweet from Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also criticized the president over Twitter.
